Treatment of a Skeletal Class II/1 Anomaly with the Damon System: A Case Report

Objective

Class II/1 anomalies can be treated using various methods, including functional appliances, twin-block appliances, and fixed appliances. The aim of this report was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Damon System in treating a patient with skeletal Class II/1 malocclusion and severe crowding.

Materials and Methods

A 12-year- and 7-month-old patient presented with a pronounced sagittal incisal overjet and severe crowding, accompanied by a deep bite and mandibular retrusion, resulting in a retrognathic facial profile. All necessary diagnostic records, including medical and dental history, model analysis, panoramic radiograph, hand-wrist radiograph, and cephalometric analysis, were obtained and evaluated. Full-arch appliances with Damon System 0.022-inch slot brackets were used in both the upper and lower arches. Class II elastics were used during the final phase of treatment.

Results

After 14 months of treatment, an optimal Class I relationship was achieved in the canine and first molar regions, crowding was eliminated, and the deep bite was corrected. Cephalometric analysis before and after treatment demonstrated marked improvements in the following values: SNA, SNB, ANB, sum of the Björk angles, NSAr, SArGo, Go, SNPog, B angle, NAPog, S-Go/N-Me, N-Me/Ar, and Go.

Conclusion

Treatment of this Class II/1 patient with the Damon System resulted in clear improvements in skeletal relationships and facial soft-tissue profile.
